The Kettwiesel Trike—a solid and stable way to have miles of pleasurable riding. I've driven over 600 miles with no rear end pain or stability problems. Adding a high-speed schlumpf drive provides you with all the gears needed. It’s extremely maneuverable. Doing 180 on narrow trails is no problem; will turn on a dime and speeds along like a dream. Even at fast downhill runs, I feel in control of the bike. Twisty descents are especially fun. Also, I was really pleased to discover how easy it was to take on the BART here in the Bay Area. Weighing only 17kg, I’m able to pull it behind me like a puppy and set it upright on the rear wheels while on the train.
I purchased my first Kettwiesel for my dear wife, Gretel. As we are both now senior citizens, we had dreams of biking together. However, she—along with a team of balancing help—just could not stay upright on my two-wheel recumbent, for more than a minute or two. The kids really tried to keep her in the saddle, but there was no way we could ever ride together without fear of hospitalization. The stability of the Kettwiesel Trike was the answer for her, and the kids all breathed a great sigh of relief. It didn't take many rides to convince me that I needed one for myself. Going uphill on my two-wheel recumbent, I would be pumping and working to keep balance as my speed slowed down, while my wife, holding a steady peddle pace, would be enjoying all the sky, butterflies and flowers. Now, with us both on Kettwiesels, we can synchronize our gears and cruise along holding hands.
If you are thinking of getting one, spend the extra money and get that high-speed schlumpf drive, front carrier, clips and rear view mirrors. One last point about stability—with two Kettwiesels, the tandem kit makes the back seat a fantastic outing for a partner who is blind.
Thanks for all the help Who – ah, Hugh.
